How to play
Gridwit is a word-guessing game. Guess the hidden word, and after each guess the tiles change colour: mint means the letter is in the right spot, amber means it's in the word but somewhere else, and slate means it isn't in the word at all. The on-screen keyboard keeps track of every letter you've tried.
Wit the owl reacts to every guess, cheering great guesses and teasing you (gently) for reusing letters you already know are wrong. If a letter appears twice in your guess but once in the word, only one of them lights up.
Five difficulties
- Easy: 4 letters, 7 tries, and your first hint is free.
- Normal: 5 letters, 6 tries.
- Hard: 6 letters. Green letters must stay in place and amber letters must be used in later guesses.
- Expert: 7 letters with Hard's rules, and an amber letter can't go back to a spot where it was already ruled out.
- Brutal: 8 letters, strict rules, no hints and 60 seconds per guess.
Modes
Daily gives you five words a day, one per difficulty, the same for everyone. You get one scored try at each, and harder words are worth more: your score mostly depends on how few guesses you used, with a smaller bonus for finishing quickly. Gauntlet is endless: words get longer every three solves, unused tries are banked as spare rows that can save you later, and one miss ends the run. Rush gives you three minutes of 5-letter words, with extra time for every quick solve.
Fib mode is the funny one: in every row exactly one tile shows the wrong colour, except when you guess the word, which always shows all mint. The keyboard only colours a letter once two rows agree. Challenge a friend lets you choose a secret word and send it as a link.
Hints, achievements and themes
Two hints are available on most difficulties: Pin reveals one letter in its spot, and Sweep greys out three letters that aren't in the word. In scored modes they cost points. Achievements like Mind Reader (solve in one) and Octopus (beat Brutal) unlock new tile colour themes, and a high-contrast mode adds shapes to the tiles for colour-blind players.
💡 Tips
- Start with a word full of common letters such as E, A, R, T, O and S.
- On your second guess, try mostly new letters to learn more.
- Amber tells you where a letter is NOT, which is just as useful as where it is.
- In Fib mode, trust colours that two different rows agree on.
- Hard and above force you to keep your clues, so plan guesses that test new letters around them.
