Tight Lines is a calm fishing game with a surprising amount of skill underneath. You cast from a dock, watch fish notice your bait, strike at the right moment and then fight them in with a tension meter. There are four waters and 47 species to collect, including legendary fish that need real preparation. Here's how to catch more, and bigger, fish.
Casting
Hold to charge your cast and release when the power bar is where you want it. Because you can see fish under the water, aim your cast near the fish you actually want, not just as far as possible. Use the Shallow / Mid / Deep buttons to set your depth: bottom feeders like catfish and sturgeon need Deep.
Reading the bite
This is where most beginners lose fish:
- A fish notices your bait and swims over.
- It nibbles: the float twitches. Don't strike yet.
- The float is pulled right under and a ! appears. Strike now.
Strike during the nibbles and the fish spits the bait. Wait too long after the ! and it steals the bait. Striking straight away when the ! appears counts as a PERFECT HOOK, which tires the fish faster and pays more.
Winning the fight
Once hooked, hold to reel and let go to give the fish line. Keep the tension marker in the green zone:
- Too long in the red: the line snaps.
- Too slack for too long: the fish throws the hook.
Fish alternate between running and resting. The fight panel tells you which: when it says the fish is running, let go; when it says to hold and reel, reel. Fighting a running fish is the most common way to snap a line. Once the fish is exhausted, bring it in.
The four waters
Unlock new waters with coins on the Travel map:
- Pine Lake (15 species): bass, trout, pike and the moonlit Ghost Catfish.
- Misty River (10): a current carries your float downstream. Salmon, eels and the giant Wels Catfish.
- Coral Bay (12): reef fish like clownfish and blue tang, tuna and blacktip sharks deeper down, and the legendary Blue Marlin.
- Frozen Fjord (10): cod, halibut and bluefin under the northern lights, and the 400-year-old Greenland Shark.
Every species you catch goes into your Fish Book along with your biggest weight.
Time and weather
- A full in-game day passes every 8 minutes. Some fish only feed by day, others at dusk or at night, so check the Fish Book and fish at the right time.
- Rain (or snow in the fjord) makes fish bite about 60% more often. It's the best time to fish.
- Golden bubbles mean a rare fish is feeding right there. Cast onto them quickly.
Bounties and streaks
The bounty fish shown in the top corner pays triple. Catching fish in a row builds a streak bonus of up to ×2, so avoid losing fish to sloppy strikes while a streak is running.
Upgrading your tackle
Coins buy better gear, and each piece helps differently:
- Rod: casts further and steadies tension.
- Reel: brings fish in faster.
- Line: handles harder pulls without snapping.
- Bait: attracts rarer fish and more bites.
Legendary fish pull far harder than your starting line can take. Upgrade your line and rod before chasing them, or you'll lose them every time.
Chasing the leaderboard
Your biggest catch goes on the global leaderboard. That means one giant fish beats a bucket of small ones. Once your tackle is upgraded, target the heaviest species in each water at their feeding time, ideally in the rain.
Summary
- Wait for the float to go fully under, then strike instantly for a Perfect Hook.
- Reel when the fish rests, let go when it runs.
- Fish at the right time of day and in the rain.
- Upgrade line and rod before hunting legends.
