🎯 A 3-Minute MOBA Warm-Up: How to Use Skillshot Gym

By Jed · October 10, 2026 · 3 min read

Most players jump straight into a ranked MOBA game cold, and their first few minutes show it: missed last hits, skillshots thrown at where the enemy was, and slow reactions. Skillshot Gym is a free browser warm-up built around the core mechanical skills of games like League of Legends and Dota 2. Each drill lasts about 40 seconds, and the Warm-Up runs all four back to back in about three minutes with one total score.

Here's what each drill trains, and how to get the most out of it.

Why warm up at all?

Mechanical skills like reaction time and aim are partly physical. A short, focused warm-up gets your hands and eyes working together before the stakes are high. Skillshot Gym also saves every run, so each drill shows your best score and a small trend line of your recent runs. That makes it easy to see when you're having an off day before you queue up.

Drill 1: Reaction

What happens: a red enemy blinks in next to you, and you press D, F, Space or click as fast as you can. Green allies are bait: reacting to them costs points, and so does pressing too early. There are ten trials, and faster reactions score more.

What it trains: reacting to real threats, not to everything that moves. In a real game that's the difference between flashing away from an engage and wasting your flash on a feint.

Technique:

  • Rest a finger on F and look at the centre of the screen, not the edges. Your peripheral vision picks up the blink faster than your eyes can move to it.
  • Don't anticipate. Pressing early is penalised, just like using a defensive spell too early in a real fight.

Drill 2: Skillshot

What happens: press Q to throw a skillshot at your cursor. The target walks, stops, jukes and sometimes sidesteps shots it sees coming. Long-range hits and hit streaks score more.

What it trains: leading your shots. Skillshots take time to travel, so you have to aim where the target will be.

Technique:

  • Lead moving targets by roughly half their speed times the distance. The further away they are, the more you lead.
  • Against a target that just turned, wait a beat. Players often juke again right after a direction change.
  • Long-range hits are worth more, so practise from max range once you're consistent.

Drill 3: Last Hit

What happens: allied minions chip away at an enemy wave, and the tower sometimes takes a big chunk. Your attack has a wind-up and travel time, so you have to start it before the minion is low enough. Only the killing blow counts.

What it trains: farming, which is the foundation of gold income in any MOBA.

Technique:

  • Watch how fast each minion is losing health, not just how much it has left. A minion being hit by three allies drops much faster.
  • Start your attack early enough for the wind-up and the projectile to arrive just as the health crosses your damage.
  • When the tower takes a big chunk, the timing changes instantly. Adjust, don't panic.

Drill 4: Dodge

What happens: right-click to move while enemies throw skillshots, area circles and fast hooks that aim where you're heading. You have Flash on D or F with an 8-second cooldown. Three lives, and it gets faster the longer you survive.

What it trains: movement under pressure, which is the skill that wins fights.

Technique:

  • Walk sideways to incoming shots, not straight away from them. Sideways movement leaves the shot's path fastest.
  • Change direction often. The hooks aim where you're heading, so a predictable line gets you caught.
  • Don't stand still while a circle is landing.
  • Save Flash for shots you truly can't walk out of.

A simple routine

  1. Run the full Warm-Up once before your first game of the day.
  2. If one drill's score is well below your trend line, run that drill again on its own.
  3. Queue up once your scores are back near your average.

The Warm-Up total and each drill have their own leaderboards, so you can also compare yourself with other players.

Start your warm-up in Skillshot Gym. Three minutes is all it takes.
